I’ve recently heard the song (and saw the performance of the song) “Dead and Gone” by T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake. The song is about someone who used to live the “gansta” life, but chose to turn away from that life because it brought nothing but pain and hurt.
The music video even featured 1 Corinthians 13:11 at the beginning:
“When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; But when I became a man, I put childish things away.”
I can respect someone for turning away from a life of crime, drugs, violence, and hurt and trying to make his or her life better. However, we will never be a new man until our old self is truly dead and gone and we are found new in Jesus by being born again. I pray T.I., Justin Timberlake, and many others truly die to their old selves and seek new life in the forgiveness of God.
